Our goal is to connect the strengths of the Columbia journalism tradition with intellectual work in the humanities and human sciences to enhance our understanding of media and journalism in society. During the first year of coursework no service is required, but in each semester of the second, third and fourth years students will be assigned an assistantship that will require research or teaching. At AIU you will build your own curriculum from courses that are appropriate for your personal and professional goals. AIU degree programs are designed for professional adults. After evaluating both academic records and life experience, AIU staff working in conjunction with Faculty and Academic Advisors, establishes the student's Academic Status.
The student's Academic Status defines the number of Credit Hours the student must complete to fulfill the academic guidelines of the institution. Academic or Life-experience credit is knowledge gained outside of the classroom through work or other professional endeavors.
The policy for accepting such credit is limited to one third of the credit requirement for the program and documentation must be provided to confirm such experience. ASIC Accreditation is an internationally renowned quality standard for colleges and universities.

Methods 15 Credits : All first-year doctoral students enroll in Quantitative Research Methods in the fall, and in Qualitative Research Methods in the spring.
These general courses deal with a variety of research methods used within the field. PhD students are also required to take three additional graduate level courses in the areas of research methods 9 hours. These may be taken inside or outside the departments. This class is designed to bridge the gap between theory and method. Students will design multiple studies of interest during the course. These courses should come from a combination of both inside and outside electives.
Independent study: Ph. Generally, these will be taken no earlier than the third semester of the program. Comprehensive examinations: Each doctoral student will be required to pass comprehensive examinations, consisting of four questions, which are generally administered after the last semester in which the student takes course work. The examinations are individually tailored for each student and comprise both written and oral examinations.
Various restrictions apply to these hours.
